BRIT-ish

Gabrielle Thomas explores the tumultuous landscape of growing up torn between two cultural identities, British and Filipino. She discusses themes of insecurity, loneliness, self-discovery and community in a series drawing largely from her own experience. Thomas has cultivated several dramatised scenes depicting core memories from her upbringing and has enveloped them in her childhood bedroom, coupled with a diary displaying the full series as well as detailing the meaning behind each image. Thomas further emphasises the juxtaposition of one’s most intimate moments being romanticised by shooting with a bold flash, befitting of the events photography style she is accustomed to.
